Common Core Math Standards:

The content standards for 2nd grade math, specifically related to the topic of money and using dollars, dimes, and pennies, come from the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). These standards outline the expected skills and knowledge that students should have by the end of the grade.

  1. 2.MD.8

    • Standard: Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately.
  2. 2.NBT.5

    • Standard: Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
  3. 2.OA.1

    • Standard: Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems, including those involving simple fractions.
  4. 2.MD.7

    • Standard: Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m.

Learning Objectives:

 

  • Understanding the value of coins:

    • Students will identify and understand the values of different coins, including pennies (1¢), dimes (10¢), nickels (5¢), and quarters (25¢), and dollar bills ($1).
  • Using money symbols:

    • Students will correctly use the $ and ¢ symbols when representing money amounts.
  • Solving word problems:

    • Students will solve word problems that involve adding or subtracting different coins (pennies, dimes, and dollars) to find the total amount of money.
  • Adding and subtracting money:

    • Students will practice adding and subtracting different combinations of coins and bills (e.g., 2 dimes and 3 pennies) to calculate the total value.
  • Real-world application of money skills:

    • Students will apply their understanding of money to real-world situations, such as making change, shopping, or budgeting.
  • Explaining problem-solving strategies:

    • Students will verbally or in writing explain how they arrived at the solution to a word problem involving money, using clear and accurate math language.
  • Reinforcing the use of visual aids:

    • Students will use visual aids such as pictures of coins and bills, number lines, or manipulatives to support their understanding and problem-solving.
